Pet Transport to Belgium: The Process

Step 1

Step 1: Review Paperwork

Once you confirm your booking, we work with your veterinarian to collect all essential documents, including vaccination records, health certificates, and other important details. At Pets in Transit, we always ensure your pet is ready for a seamless journey.

Step 2

Step 2: Prepare Travel Documents

Belgium has strict rules for pets entering the country. Our team manages the preparation of all travel documents, ensuring microchip information is accurate and health certificates meet EU standards. We make sure every requirement and all documentation align with Belgium’s import regulations.

Step 3

Step 3: Book Flights

After documents are in order and finalized, we identify the best flights that balance safety, comfort, and minimal travel time. We coordinate with airlines and flight crews to ensure your pet receives attentive care throughout the journey.

Step 4

Step 4: Receive Travel Itinerary

Before departure, you’ll receive a complete itinerary for your pet’s journey with flight details, check-in instructions, and timing for pick-up or delivery. This keeps you informed and confident about every stage of your pet’s travel.

Step 5

Step 5: Arrange Pick-Up

Wherever you are in Belgium, we offer convenient pick-up options—at your home, vet, airport, or wherever your pet will be waiting. Our trained handlers ensure your pet remains calm, comfortable, and safe during transport and check-in procedures.

Step 6

Step 6: Get Transit Updates

At Pets in Transit, we keep you updated from the very beginning of the journey to the very end. You’ll receive notifications during check-in, in-flight progress, and arrival so you always know how your pet is doing and where they are.

Step 7

Step 7: Customs & Delivery

Once your pet arrives in Belgium, we manage customs procedures and any required checks or quarantines. Then we safely transport and deliver your pet to your new home, ensuring a smooth, secure, and stress-free relocation.

Belgium Pet Vaccination, Quarantine, & Travel Requirements

Preparing your pet for travel to Belgium requires a lot of planning and preparation. Pets must meet strict identification, vaccination, and documentation standards to enter the country. From microchipping and rabies vaccinations to EU health certificates and airline compliance, every requirement must be carefully completed. At Pets in Transit, we guide you through every step of the process and help you stay organized, avoid delays, and ensure your pet’s journey is safe and comfortable.

Microchip & Identification

All pets entering Belgium must have a functioning ISO-compliant microchip (ISO 11784/11785) implanted before their rabies vaccination. Your veterinarian should scan the chip during each appointment to verify accuracy. If your pet’s microchip isn’t ISO-compliant, you must implant a new ISO-compliant chip or travel with a scanner that can read the existing chip. Pets in Transit confirms compliance and coordinates any necessary microchipping to prevent travel delays.

Note: ISO-compliant microchip numbers are typically 15 digits long.

Rabies Vaccination & Certification

Belgium requires pets to have a valid rabies vaccination administered after microchip implantation. Pets must wait the period specified by the vaccine manufacturer—usually at least 21 days—before traveling.

Here are the rules for rabies vaccinations in Belgium, according to the USDA website.

“Primary” Rabies Vaccination

The first rabies vaccine after microchip implantation (or after any lapse in coverage) is considered a “primary” vaccination under EU rules. In the U.S., a primary vaccination is valid for one year even if a 3-year vaccine is used. A booster must be given within 12 months to maintain coverage; any lapse resets the timeline.

“Booster” Rabies Vaccination

Boosters administered within one year of the primary vaccine are valid for 1–3 years depending on the manufacturer. Pets may travel to Belgium less than 21 days after a booster if the previous vaccination is still valid and all documentation is provided.

EU Health Certificate & USDA Endorsement

Pets traveling to Belgium need an EU health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian or military veterinarian. For personal moves, a “non-commercial” certificate is generally sufficient. The certificate must then be endorsed by the USDA, which involves countersigning and stamping to confirm compliance with EU regulations. Pets in Transit schedules vet visits, manages USDA submissions through VEHCS, and ensures all documentation is accurate and returned on time.

Quarantine Rules

Belgium does not require quarantine if all import requirements are met, including valid microchip and rabies vaccination and proper documentation. Pets that do not meet these requirements may be refused entry or quarantined at the owner’s expense. Our team ensures every step is completed correctly to avoid delays and quarantine.

Airline & Crate Requirements

All pets flying to Belgium must travel in IATA- and airline-approved crates. Crates should allow pets to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably. Pets in Transit helps you select or custom-build a crate that meets regulations, and we verify all airline-specific requirements to ensure a smooth journey.

Breed Restrictions & Travel Conditions

Belgium does not have a national ban on specific dog breeds, but regional restrictions may apply. Certain breeds like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Mastiffs are subject to mandatory muzzle requirements when in public.

Pets in Transit reviews breed-specific rules, seasonal travel restrictions, and airline policies to ensure seamless and compliant travel.
