China Pet Relocation Process

Step 1

Step 1: Review Paperwork

After approving our proposal, we begin by reviewing your pet’s microchip information, vaccination records, and past veterinary treatments to ensure they align with China’s entry rules. If anything needs updating, we’ll let you know right away.

Step 2

Step 2: Prepare Travel Documents

China’s documentation process can be very complex, especially when coordinating health certificates and government endorsements. We work directly with your vet to organize every required form, confirm treatment windows, and prepare export paperwork that meets all Chinese customs and inspection standards.

Step 3

Step 3: Book Flights

Once your documents are in order, we secure the most pet-appropriate flight route into China. We prioritize airlines with strong pet-handling procedures, minimize layovers, and arrange temperature-controlled transport options to keep your pet safe and comfortable from takeoff to landing.

Step 4

Step 4: Receive Travel Itinerary

You’ll receive a clear, easy-to-follow itinerary outlining your pet’s travel schedule, check-in instructions, handling contacts, and arrival procedures in China. Every detail is included, giving you full visibility into how the journey will unfold.

Step 5

Step 5: Arrange Pick-Up

Whether your pet is starting from your home, a boarding facility, your veterinarian’s office, or another trusted location, we’ll coordinate a safe, calm pick-up. Our trained handlers transport your pet securely, ensuring they’re settled, hydrated, and comfortable before travel starts.

China Pet Quarantine, Transport, & Travel Requirements

Moving your pet to China requires careful preparation, strict documentation, and full compliance with the country’s entry rules. While China does not require quarantine for pets who meet every import requirement, even a small documentation error can result in mandatory quarantine or a pet being denied entry entirely. At Pets in Transit, we guide you through every step, from rabies vaccinations and titer tests to health certificates, customs procedures, and post-arrival registration. Here’s what you need to know before your pet travels:

Microchip & Identification

Your pet must have an ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip (15 digits) before traveling to China.

  • The microchip number must appear on all documents, including rabies vaccine certificates, titer test reports, and health certificates.
  • If your pet has a non-ISO chip, you must bring a compatible scanner with you when entering China.
  • Only one pet is allowed per traveler, and the traveler’s name must match the name listed on the pet’s veterinary health certificate.

Rabies Vaccination

China requires proof of two lifetime rabies vaccinations, and the pet must be current on rabies vaccination at the time of arrival.

  • You must present an original rabies certificate, which may be kept by Chinese quarantine officials.
  • Always carry photocopies, as they are frequently requested.
  • Rabies certificates must include manufacturer, batch number, validity dates, and the pet’s microchip number.

Rabies Titer Test (FAVN) Requirements

To enter any port in China without quarantine, your pet must have a valid rabies antibody titer test. The original titer report must accompany the health certificate and may be kept upon entry.

  • The titer must be ≥ 0.5 IU/mL.
  • Only U.S.-approved labs are accepted:
    • DoD Food Analysis & Diagnostic Laboratory
    • Kansas State University Rabies Laboratory
    • Auburn University Virology Laboratory
  • The titer sample must be taken the same day or after the second rabies vaccine, and results remain valid for up to one year.
  • Pets from Hawaii and Guam are exempt from titer testing.

International Health Certificate

Every pet must have its own APHIS-endorsed international health certificate issued within 14 days of arrival in China.

  • Only one pet per certificate.
  • The traveler’s name must match the passport that accompanies the pet.

Health certificates must include:

  • Microchip number, date, and implantation location
  • Age or date of birth
  • Rabies vaccination details (type, dates, manufacturer, expiration)
  • Rabies titer test information (sample date, lab, and titer result)
  • A veterinarian’s attestation that the pet is healthy and free of disease

Electronic veterinarian signatures are accepted, but USDA must ink-sign and emboss the certificate.

Documents Required Upon Arrival

You must present the following at the General Administration of Customs (GACC) office:

  • USDA-endorsed health certificate
  • Original rabies vaccine certificate
  • Original titer test report
  • A photocopy of your passport
  • A printed photo of your pet (with a size reference for large dogs)

These documents may be kept by China Customs.

Registering Your Dog in China

All dogs must be registered with the police bureau in your local neighborhood within one month of arrival.

  • Requirements vary by city, so contacting the local police office in advance is recommended.
  • Some cities have breed restrictions or pet limits per household.

Quarantine Rules

If a pet does not meet every entry requirement, it must enter China through a designated port and complete a 30-day government quarantine. During quarantine, pets may undergo exams or laboratory testing if symptoms develop. They are released only after being medically cleared.

Airline & Crate Requirements

Airlines traveling to China require IATA-compliant crates with proper ventilation, hardware, and size specifications. We help ensure your crate meets flight and destination standards.

Breed Restrictions & Travel Policies

Some Chinese cities restrict or limit specific dog breeds—particularly large, “power,” or guardian breeds.

  • Policies vary by province and city.
  • We help you check restrictions in your destination to avoid issues on arrival or during registration.

Customs & Arrival Procedures

Upon landing, pets and documents must be taken directly to the GACC office at the airport.

  • Officials review paperwork and verify microchip identity.
  • If everything is compliant, pets are released immediately—no quarantine required.
  • If not, pets are transferred to a government facility for 30 days.

We coordinate arrival timelines, customs procedures, and delivery to your home once cleared.
