Peru Pet Transport Process

Step 1

Step 1: Review Paperwork

Every successful move to Peru begins with a detailed review. Pets in Transit carefully evaluates your pet’s vaccination history, microchip registration, and medical records against current import requirements. By identifying gaps or timing issues early, we create a clear, customized action plan that keeps your relocation on schedule.

Step 2

Step 2: Prepare Travel Documents

Peru requires accurate, properly endorsed paperwork for entry. We work directly with your veterinarian to coordinate exams, update vaccinations if needed, and prepare official health certificates and supporting documents. Every form is reviewed for accuracy and compliance to help prevent costly delays or complications at arrival.

Step 3

Step 3: Book Flights

Air travel is one of the most critical parts of your pet’s journey. We research and select airline routes based on safety standards, seasonal considerations, and the shortest, most pet-friendly travel options available. Our team prioritizes minimal layovers and smooth connections to ensure a secure and comfortable trip.

Step 4

Step 4: Receive Travel Itinerary

Once arrangements are confirmed, you’ll receive a comprehensive itinerary outlining each milestone—from pre-departure appointments to customs clearance in Peru. This detailed overview ensures you know exactly what to expect and when, eliminating uncertainty throughout the process.

Step 5

Step 5: Arrange Pick-Up

On departure day, trained pet handlers coordinate safe transportation from your home, veterinarian, boarding facility, or another preferred location. We oversee check-in procedures, crate preparation, and pre-flight comfort measures so your pet begins their journey calm and secure.

Step 6

Step 6: Get Transit Updates

Your peace of mind matters. Throughout transit, we provide timely updates as your pet checks in, departs, lands, and moves through each phase of travel. With Pets in Transit, you’ll never be left wondering about your companion’s status.

Step 7

Step 7: Customs & Delivery

Upon arrival in Peru, our local partners manage customs processing, document verification, and any required inspections. Once cleared, we coordinate secure delivery to your home or final destination, ensuring a smooth reunion and a confident start to your new chapter together.

Peru Pet Travel Requirements

Traveling with your pet to Peru requires accurate documentation, proper veterinary preparation, and compliance with USDA and Peruvian entry regulations. While the process is straightforward when handled correctly, incomplete paperwork or missed requirements can result in delays or entry denial. Pets in Transit helps ensure every detail is properly managed—from coordinating USDA-accredited veterinary exams to securing endorsed health certificates and preparing travel documentation. Here is an overview of what to expect when preparing your pet for travel to Peru:

Import Permit

Personal pet dogs and cats traveling from the United States to Peru do not require an import permit. However, pets must fully meet Peru’s official health and documentation requirements before departure. Failure to comply with the required documentation may result in entry issues upon arrival.

Health Certificate

Dogs and cats entering Peru must have an official Veterinary Health Certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and endorsed by USDA APHIS Veterinary Services. Certificates can be issued and digitally endorsed through the Veterinary Export Health Certification System (VEHCS), and a printed copy of the endorsed certificate must accompany your pet throughout travel. The certificate confirms that your pet is healthy, free of clinical signs of infectious or parasitic diseases, and fit for travel.

Rabies Vaccination Requirements

Dogs and cats traveling to Peru that are older than 3 months of age must be vaccinated against rabies within 12 months prior to export. The rabies vaccination certificate must accompany the health certificate and include the vaccine name, batch number, date of administration, and expiration date.

Pets younger than 3 months of age are not required to have received the rabies vaccination. Planning with your veterinarian ensures your pet meets all age and vaccination requirements before travel.

Additional Vaccination Requirements

Peru requires documentation of other core vaccinations as part of the official health certificate.

  • Dogs must be vaccinated within 12 months prior to travel for distemper, canine hepatitis, leptospirosis (L. canicola and L. icterohaemorrhagiae), parvovirus, and parainfluenza.
  • Cats must be vaccinated within 12 months prior to travel for feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia.

If any vaccinations are missing or have expired, they may need to be administered after arrival in Peru at the owner’s expense.

Parasite Treatment

All dogs and cats must be treated for endo- and ectoparasites within 30 days prior to export using products approved in the country of origin. Documentation of this treatment should be included in the health certificate.

Airline & Transport Considerations

Airlines and transport providers have their own policies regarding pet travel, including crate standards, documentation verification, and routing requirements. These airline-specific rules must be followed in addition to Peru’s government regulations. Pets in Transit ensures all airline requirements are met for a safe and comfortable journey.

Returning to the United States

Pet owners planning to return to the U.S. should be aware that the CDC has additional entry requirements for dogs. These rules must be followed exactly, or re-entry may be denied. Pets in Transit can help ensure all U.S. re-entry requirements are met.

Breed Restrictions

When relocating a dog to Peru, it’s important to be aware that certain breeds and their crossbreeds may face restrictions. While Peru does not have a formal nationwide ban on specific dog breeds like some countries do, airlines and transport providers may impose their own restrictions on breeds considered “aggressive” or “high risk.”

Pets in Transit can help you understand whether your dog’s breed may be subject to additional requirements and advise on documentation, crate specifications, or alternate travel arrangements to ensure safe and compliant transport to Peru
