South Africa Pet Quarantine, Shipping, & Travel Requirements

Relocating your pet to South Africa means meeting strict import, veterinary, and documentation rules. All pets must have a veterinary import permit, a USDA-endorsed health certificate, and—depending on species—specific laboratory testing completed at approved international reference labs. At Pets in Transit, we stay current with South Africa’s veterinary and customs regulations so your pet’s travel is fully compliant. Here’s what to expect when preparing for a move to South Africa:

Microchip & Identification

Before traveling, your pet must be microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip for identification. The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination, and it should be readable by international scanners upon arrival.

If your pet’s existing chip is not ISO-compliant, we can assist with re-microchipping or provide guidance on traveling with your own scanner. Our team will verify that all identification information matches your veterinary and travel documents to avoid entry delays.

Rabies Vaccination & Certification

South Africa requires a valid rabies vaccination given after microchipping and administered at least 30 days before travel unless otherwise stated on your health certificate.

We’ll review your pet’s medical records, confirm vaccine timelines, and make sure all documentation is consistent with South Africa’s regulations.

Veterinary Import Permit (Required for Dogs & Cats)

All dogs and cats traveling to South Africa must have a veterinary import permit. Veterinary import permit applications and further information can be found on the Republic of South Africa’s website at https://www.gov.za/services/import/import-animals-and-animal-products. The completed veterinary permit applications can be sent to the Permit Office at VetPermits@daff.gov.za.

Once approved, you’ll receive an official import permit and the country-specific veterinary health certificate. Both documents must be given to your USDA-accredited veterinarian right away so the health certificate can be completed accurately and endorsed on time.

Required Blood Tests for Dogs

U.S.-origin dogs must test negative for Trypanosoma evansi (surra) using both the CATT test and the Giemsa blood smear test. These tests can only be performed at one of the two OIE Reference Laboratories in Belgium or Japan.

Your pet’s microchip number must appear on all lab reports, and testing must follow the timing listed on South Africa’s health certificate. We help coordinate sample submissions and shipping logistics to ensure results are processed properly and without delay.

USDA Health Certificate & Endorsement

South Africa requires a USDA-endorsed veterinary health certificate for every pet, including service and emotional support animals. The certificate must be issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and then ink-signed and embossed by USDA-APHIS.

Issuance and endorsement must occur within 10 days of travel, and all testing must match the exact requirements in the health certificate. Incorrect or incomplete paperwork can lead to denied entry.

Quarantine Rules

South Africa does not automatically quarantine all pets, but quarantine may be required if documents are incomplete, testing requirements were not met, or vaccination and microchip timelines are incorrect.

We review your pet’s paperwork and import permit to confirm whether quarantine applies and help you meet all requirements to avoid delays when your pet arrives in South Africa.

Airline & Crate Requirements

All pets traveling to South Africa must be transported in an IATA-compliant crate designed for international air travel. The crate must provide enough ventilation, space, and security for your pet’s safety. We can help select or custom-build the right crate, ensuring it meets both airline and destination standards.

We also work closely with trusted airlines that have experience handling pet cargo, prioritizing routes with minimal layovers and safe climate conditions for animal travel.

Breed Restrictions & Travel Conditions

While South Africa does not impose strict breed bans, some airlines may restrict certain breeds. We’ll confirm all restrictions in advance and design a travel plan that accounts for weather, flight times, and any potential breed-specific limitations.
