Thailand Pet Transport Process

Step 1

Step 1: Review Paperwork

Step 2

Step 2: Prepare Travel Documents

Thailand’s pet entry process depends on precise documentation and timing. We work directly with your veterinarian to prepare health certificates, confirm vaccination schedules, and complete all required export and import forms—ensuring accuracy and avoiding last-minute issues.

We carefully select airlines and routes that prioritize pet safety and comfort. By minimizing transit time, reducing layovers, and confirming pet-friendly handling procedures, we create a flight plan that supports a calm journey to Thailand.

Thailand Pet Transport & Travel Requirements

Traveling with a pet to Thailand requires careful planning, accurate documentation, and strict adherence to Thai import regulations. While the process is straightforward when handled correctly, missing paperwork or improper endorsements can lead to delays or entry issues. Pets in Transit helps you navigate Thailand’s requirements with confidence—coordinating permits, health certificates, USDA endorsements, and airline considerations to ensure a smooth arrival. Below is an overview of what to expect when preparing your pet for travel to Thailand.

Import Permit

All dogs and cats entering Thailand must have an approved import permit issued by Thai authorities. This permit must be secured before travel and is required whether your pet is traveling with you or as cargo. Pets in Transit assists with the application process and ensures the permit aligns with your travel timeline.

Pet Age Requirements

Pets traveling to Thailand must be at least four months old at the time of entry. This applies to dogs and cats traveling with their owners or independently and must be verified through veterinary records.

Rabies & Required Vaccinations

Thailand requires dogs and cats to have current rabies vaccinations and a USDA-endorsed health certificate confirming your pet is healthy and travel-ready. A USDA-accredited veterinarian must examine your pet within 10 days of departure, verify the microchip or tattoo, and certify that your pet shows no signs of infectious disease or rabies exposure. Vaccinations must be administered at least 21 days before travel and remain valid at departure.

  • Cats: Rabies and feline panleukopenia
  • Dogs: Rabies, canine distemper, infectious canine hepatitis, canine parvovirus, and leptospirosis (unless testing is documented)

All vaccination dates and identification numbers must be clearly listed on the official USDA health certificate and endorsed by APHIS for entry into Thailand.

Health Certificate & USDA Endorsement

Thailand requires an official health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. While veterinarians may complete and submit certificates electronically through VEHCS, the final certificate must be ink-signed and embossed by USDA APHIS. The endorsed original document must travel with your pet and be presented upon arrival.

Traveling With vs. Without an Owner

Requirements vary depending on whether your pet is traveling with you or separately.

Pets traveling with a person must have:

  • Approved import permit
  • USDA-endorsed health certificate
  • Copy of the pet owner’s passport

Pets traveling alone must also provide:

  • Notification to Thailand’s Quarantine Station
  • U.S. origin address and Thailand destination address
  • Copy of the pet’s flight itinerary
  • Copy of the shipper’s passport
  • Copy of the receiving person’s passport

Advance Coordination with Thailand Quarantine Authorities

Pets traveling unaccompanied must have their travel details communicated to Thailand’s Quarantine Station in advance. This step is essential for customs clearance and inspection upon arrival and must align with the submitted documentation.

Airline & Crate Requirements

Airlines and shipping companies set their own policies for pet transport, including crate requirements, routing rules, and documentation checks. These policies may differ from government requirements. Pets in Transit coordinates airline logistics and confirms all carrier-specific rules are met before departure.

Transit Through Other Countries

If your pet transits through another country—particularly within the European Union—a separate transit health certificate may be required. Transit documentation follows the same process as if that country were the final destination, and timing must be carefully planned.

Arrival & Inspection in Thailand

Upon landing, pets and paperwork are reviewed by Thai quarantine officials. Complete, accurate, and properly endorsed documentation helps prevent delays or complications during inspection. Pets in Transit works to ensure everything is prepared correctly before departure.

Returning to the United States

If you plan to return to the U.S. with your pet, additional CDC and APHIS requirements—especially for dogs—may apply. These rules must be followed exactly to avoid re-entry denial.
